Rankings FAQs

How the polls and the NET metric work.

What is the AP Top 25?

The Associated Press poll ranks the top 25 teams based on votes from a national panel of sportswriters and broadcasters. It is released weekly through the season and is the most widely cited ranking in college basketball.

How is the Coaches Poll different from the AP poll?

The Coaches Poll is voted on by active head coaches rather than media members. The two polls usually broadly agree, though individual placements often differ by a few spots.

What are NET rankings?

The NCAA Evaluation Tool is the NCAA's own metric, combining game results, strength of schedule, game location and scoring efficiency. Unlike the polls it involves no human voting, and the selection committee uses it as a seeding and selection input.

How often do rankings update?

The AP and Coaches polls are released weekly, typically on Mondays during the season. NET rankings recalculate daily as results are entered.

Do rankings decide NCAA Tournament seeding?

Not directly. The selection committee sets the bracket using NET, strength of schedule, results against ranked opponents and other factors. Poll rankings are influential but carry no formal weight.

What does "receiving votes" mean?

A team receiving votes was named on at least one ballot but did not accumulate enough to place in the top 25. It is a common indicator that a team is close to breaking into the rankings.
